While working
the joint primary election/run-offs this year, I learned that
NACA resident and co-worker Bill Johnson and his wife Cathy
(pictured left) have a special need. They need a ride to
Killeen, Texas on Friday, July 28th or Saturday, July 29th to
attend Bill’s 40th reunion at Killeen High School.
The schedule of events begin on the evening
of Friday, July 28th with a celebration at Stonebridge
Café in Killeen about 7pm. On Saturday morning, there is
a tour of Killeen High School, followed by a BBQ lunch. After
lunch, Bill and Cathy want to visit Bill’s mother’s
grave, then visit his father in an assisted living center in
Harker Heights. After dinner, there is a dance at the
Killeen Civic Center. Bill is hoping to locate a manual
folding wheelchair with a 20” seat to take to Killeen.
Married for 15 years, both Bill and Cathy
are wheelchair users and very busy people. An army brat, Bill
was born in Fort Worth, and his father retired from the Army
the day Bill graduated from high school. Bill contributes his
time and talent in many ways, and is active in many disability
civil rights movement organizations. He works most
elections and tries to attend NACA meetings. He is a great
storyteller and accomplished comedian, keeping fellow election
workers entertained and happy with his numerous jokes and
stories.
An oil brat, Cathy was born in Pampa,
Texas, and is a graduate of Bryan High School. Her father was
an oil consultant and the family lived in many places,
including Singapore and Tehran. She is a Hemiplegia
artist, who paints landscapes in oil. She has many of her
paintings on display at Wheatsville Co-op, Zion Messianic
Cultral Center at North Cross Mall, and at the Wheelchair
Fitness Center in the Sears parking lot.
Both exercise at the wheelchair fitness
center five days a week. They are also champion wheelchair
dancers.
If you know someone who is between jobs,
please let them know that Bill and Cathy are looking for a
caregiver. They can apply for this position at Services for the Elderly, 2200 E. MLK Jr. Blvd. (477-3796); ask to be
referred to William and Cathy Johnson. Also, this active
couple would like to find a wheelchair-accessible home that
suits their needs. Contact Bill or Cathy at: cbj1990@sbcglobal.net
Bonus: Here’s one of Bill’s
jokes about Aggies and the Longhorns: These two Aggies wanted
to go to a UT football game in Austin. They went in their car
down I-35. They saw a sign that said “UT left.” So
they went home.
